1950's do-it-yourself projects

When I was a kid, my dad had a great do-it-yourself encyclopedia from Popular Mechanics. It was from 1955 and I would get lost for hours with those books.

The set was lost when our basement flooded, along with stacks of NASA memorabilia (Dad worked on the space program). I always thought of those books, and recently unearthed a pristine copy of the encyclopedia set for ten bucks.

I'll post periodically. The printing is terrible. I'm experimenting to find the best way to scan and deliver. Please bear with me if the first few aren't that great.

Build a Sailing Scow!

Imagine the stares you'll get as you pilot this downright sensible beauty along the shore. There's a lot of nice Popular Mechanics touches here like the curved prow, keeping the lines smooth and graceful. I think this is a plywood babe-magnet like no other.

Space-age gems from your workbench!

Eyes sparkle when they gaze at this aptly-named Striped Heart from Laminated Plastic Sheets. My neighbor thought it was a diamond! (She's a little bit ill.) C'mon fellas, make one for your sweetheart!
